- Not All Thumb Braces Are the SameIf you or your patient's thumb is being drawn into the palm due to neurological impairment, median nerve injury, or contracture, a standard thumb brace will not solve the problem. You need something that actively repositions the thumb and holds it in functional abduction. The Comfort Cool Thumb CMC Abduction Orthosis was built precisely for that. How It Differs from the CMC Restriction Splint:The Comfort Cool CMC Restriction Splint — our flagship thumb brace — manages pain by limiting motion at the CMC joint. The Abduction Orthosis does something different: it uses a moldable thermoplastic insert to actively position the thumb in abduction and maintain that position throughout wear. The Moldable Insert:The thermoplastic insert built into the thumb strap can be softened in a microwave and molded directly along the thenar eminence crease to match the patient's exact anatomy and the therapist's prescribed position. Once cooled, it holds its shape — giving the patient a custom-molded positional orthosis without the time and cost of a full fabrication appointment. Who it helps: The Abduction Orthosis is indicated for thumb deformity and adduction contractures caused by neurological conditions, stroke, median nerve injuries, or arthritis where the thumb is held adducted against the palm. By abducting and stabilizing the first metacarpal and opening the thumb web space, it restores the hand to a more functional resting position and prevents further contracture development. The Comfort Cool Foundation:Built on the same breathable, lightweight neoprene that has made Comfort Cool the most recommended thumb orthosis in hand therapy for decades. Soft terry cloth lining keeps skin comfortable during extended wear. Full finger function is maintained. Latex-free. Hand wash and air dry. Sizing: Measure MP circumference to determine size. Plus sizes are available — a half size larger in the hand and a full size larger in thumb circumference — for patients with enlarged or swollen thumb presentations. Available in right and left hand.
