Gregoryen mezhebine bağlılıkları ve zaman zaman ortaya çıkan bağımsızlık arayışları, Bizans ile ilişkilerini sürekli bir gerilim hattında tutmuştur. Bizans’ın Ermeni topluluklarına karşı uyguladığı sert politikalar, özellikle Selçuklu akınlarının başladığı dönemde daha da yoğunlaşmıştır. Doğu Anadolu’da Vaspurakan ve Bagratuni gibi krallıkların çatısı altında varlık gösteren Ermeniler, bu baskı ortamında hem iç siyasi kırılmalar yaşamış hem de büyük güçlerin mücadele alanında bir tampon bölge işlevi görmüşlerdir. Selçukluların Anadolu’ya yönelmesiyle Ermeniler, iki güç arasında kritik bir konumda yer almış, aralarındaki gerilime rağmen Bizans safında yer alarak Selçuklu ilerleyişine direnmeye çalışmışlardır. Yaklaşık yarım asır devam eden bu süreç, Malazgirt Meydan Muharebesi ile yeni bir döneme evrilmiştir. Bu büyük kırılma sonrasında Anadolu’nun siyasi dengeleri köklü biçimde değişirken, Ermeniler de konumlarını yeniden belirlemek zorunda kalmışlardır. Selçuklu hâkimiyetinin güçlenmesiyle bazı Ermeni liderleri bağımsız hareket etme arayışına girerken, bazıları Selçuklu otoritesiyle iş birliği yolunu seçmiştir. Sultan Melikşah döneminde görece istikrarlı bir ortam oluşsa da, bu denge Haçlı Seferleri ile bambaşka bir çatışma sahasına dönüşmüştür. Oğuzhan Çakır’ın kaleminden Selçuklu Anadolusunda Ermeniler, Farsça, Arapça ve Ermenice kaynakları özgün dillerinden, karşılaştırmalı bir yöntemle değerlendirerek tarihsel bir anlatı sunarken, Anadolu’nun toplumsal ve siyasal yapısının daha derinlikli biçimde anlaşılmasına da imkân tanıyor.
