Some people had trouble with it sewing by itself. It was also reported to need troubleshooting very often. A customer had to spend a lot of money making sure that the machine works correctly. The touch screen of the machine broke down after 2.5 years of use and could not be repaired. Another customer concluded that the Bernette 79 is not meant for heavy fabrics and projects that involve several layers. However, the machine is capable of regular sewing, embroidery, and light sewing to some degree. The needle threader has a challenge with tight positions.
